| Thallus pendulous, to 30 (–60) cm long, grey-green; branching anisotomic, subdichotomous; secondary branching subparallel; trunk pale; branches terete, 0.5–1.0 mm wide, with irregular cracks in annular rings, never completely decorticate; apices tapered; without branchlets; fibrils numerous, curved, irregularly arranged, to 3 cm long; papillae sparse to moderately numerous on older branches, pale. Isidia sparse or absent; pseudocyphellae absent or on the tips of papillae; soralia absent. Cortex smooth to uneven, dull or glossy, cracked, scurfy, irregularly eroded with shallow fissures filled with regenerative tissue. Medulla dense, narrow; axis half the width of the branch, hyaline, with occasional dusky patches through it. Apothecia not seen. CHEMISTRY: Cortex containing usnic acid. Medulla K+ bright yellow; containing stictic acid (major), constictic acid (minor), menegazziaic acid (minor), cryptostictic acid (trace) and norstictic acid (trace). |  |
